Northern Virginia air travelers will have a new option to get to sunny San Diego, starting at the end of springtime.

Alaska Airlines has announced plans to provide non-stop, daily service to San Diego from Washington Dulles International Airport beginning June 15. It is part of an expansion that also will see service from San Diego to Tampa, starting later in the year.

“Our guests in San Diego asked for more nonstops to the East Coast, and we’re excited to add service to both the nation’s capital and Florida’s vibrant Gulf Coast,” said Neil Thwaites, the airline’s regional vice president of California services.

The Dulles service will use Boeing 737-900 aircraft in a three-cabin configuration. Flights will depart Washington at 10:15 a.m., arriving in San Diego at 12:30 p.m., and will depart San Diego at 8 a.m., arriving at Dulles at 4:10 p.m.

(All times are local at the destination.)

The additions of Dulles, Tampa and Eugene (Ore.) bring to 35 the number of nonstops out of San Diego for Alaska Airlines.

The announcement of the new routes is “a great way to start the year,” said Kimberly Becker, president and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.
