A Langley High School student was one of five from Fairfax County’s public schools to be nominated for American Visions (best-in-show) awards in the 2024 Regional Scholastic Art Awards program.

Meredith Yu, who was honored for her submission “Shake It Off,” received the top award along with students from Lake Braddock Secondary School and South Lakes, South County and Westfield high schools.

Fairfax students in grades 7-12 garnered a total of 714 awards for outstanding artwork, including 176 Gold Key awards, 172 Silver Key awards and 366 honorable-mention awards. Artwork was submitted and judged in categories including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture, digital art, design, architecture, jewelry, fashion, film and animation, mixed media and art portfolios.

An exhibition of American Visions, Gold Key and Silver Key artworks will be displayed at Northern Virginia Community College’s Ernst Community Cultural Center in Annandale through March 14, with an awards ceremony on March 6.

The Scholastic Art Awards program, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, is the largest, longest-running recognition program of its kind in the U.S. Established in 1923, the awards have recognized teens who have become some of our nation’s most celebrated artists, including Richard Avedon, Robert Indiana, Phillip Pearlstein and Andy Warhol.
