The 2023-24 school year for Fairfax County Public Schools will begin Aug. 21, giving students two weeks of class prior to Labor Day, under a 180-instructional-day calendar adopted by the School Board.

School leaders in fact approved calendars for the next three school years, an effort to give parents and staff more time for advance planning.

More than 78,000 parents, employees, students and community members provided input early in the calendar-development process by participating in a survey, while more than 37,000 people submitted feedback on the four draft calendar options presented over the course of the last month, school officials said.

“While no calendar will ever accommodate everyone, we have tried to come as close as possible,” School Board chair Rachna Sizemore Heizer said.

“We listened to the community both at the input and feedback stages of the process, and have worked hard to reflect community voice,” Sizemore said.

The 2023-24 calendar will include a two-week winter break in December; the one-week spring break will align with those of surrounding jurisdictions. The last day of class will be June 12, 2024.
