Langley, McLean baseball teams improve winning streaks

Saxons begin week in first place in Liberty District standings

The McLean High School baseball team has won four games in a row, including a 7-3 comeback win over South Lakes.

The Langley Saxons (10-4, 6-1) took over sole possession of first place in the Liberty District with a 6-5 win over the Yorktown Patriots in 10 innings, then a 12-1 rout of the Washington-Liberty Generals in high-school baseball games last week.

The victories extended the team’s winning streak to eight games, giving Langley one more win than last season’s total.

Nick Newburn started and pitched five innings to get the win against W-L. Langley took control early by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, helped by a run-scoring double by Owen Lochhead and Cameron Tallent’s RBI single.

Langley also scored eight runs in the sixth inning, three coming on Jamie Lee’s three-run triple. Lochhead, Dylan Raufer, Parker Whelan and Adham Sahebzadah had RBI singles in the frame. Thomas Sharp had two RBI hits in the win and Luke Greehan doubled.

Against Yorktown, Langley won in the bottom of the 10th on Sharp’s game-winning, two-out single. Aidan Jacques was the winning pitcher in relief. 

Langley rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 5. Sharp had an RBI hit drive in the tying run. Whelan had an RBI single in the win and Raufer had two RBI.

• After five straight losses, four by one run, the McLean Highlanders bounced back to win four baseball games in a row, including Liberty District victories over the Marshall Statesmen, 4-2, and Wakefield Warriors, 7-3, in high-school contests. McLean then rallied to top host South Lakes, 7-3, to improve to 9-6 overall and stand 5-3 in the league.

Against Marshall, Daniel Alexander Gonzalez started and pitched 6 1/3 innings to get the win. He struck out 10 and walked none. Jack Nance earned the save. With the bat, Yuta Shimo had an RBI double and Brennan Core and Aydin Prell each had two hits.

For Marshall, Nathan Lake pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, one walk and one earned run allowed.

Against Wakefield, McLean had 10 hits, with Shimo, Prell, Gore and James Coates having two each and Gabriel Pegues doubled. Aidan Carey started and pitched five innings to get the win and Jack Nance closed. They combined on a four-hitter.

McLean scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat South Lakes, highlighted by Ethan Ball’s three-run homer to give the team a 4-3 lead. Ball had four hits and three RBI in the win. Prell hit a solo homer, Core had a hit and an RBI and Reid Turner doubled. The Highlanders had 10 hits for the second game in a row.

Daniel Ockerman threw two innings of relief to get the win with three strikeouts.
