Potomac School softball team extends long league win streak

Panthers will be the top seed in conference tournament

Add another bunch of victories to the Potomac School Panthers’ long and growing multi-season winning streak against conference opponents.

With a final 7-0 regular-season record against Independent School League rivals this spring, the girls high-school softball team has won 46 straight games (including 11 playoff contests) against conference foes. The Panthers (11-1 overall) will be the top seed in the upcoming AA Division of the ISL tournament, a competition they have won the past four times it has been held.

“The season so far has gone pretty much as expected,” Potomac School coach Wayne Loving said. “Right now everyone is playing well and healthy, and you hold your breath that continues.”

Potomac School finished regular-season conference play with a 9-0 victory over the host Flint Hill Huskies on April 30. Flint Hill was the last ISL team to defeat Potomac School, back in the 2019 regular season.

In the April 30 game, Potomac School right-hander Abby Rebhan (11-1) threw a two-hitter and struck out 14. With the bat, she hit a long solo homer to center, then later added a two-run  single. The homer was her fifth this season.

“Abby has been dominant with her great control and she keeps hitters off balance,” Loving said.

Rebhan will play next season at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Paige Schedler had a couple of hits (one double) and an RBI for the Panthers against Flint Hill, Charlotte Parry had two hits, including a two-run single, and Leyton Mayrhofer also had two hits. Fae Butler and Hayley Richardson had RBI sacrifice bunts.

Potomac School also defeated Jackson-Reed, 10-0, and St. John’s, 3-2, in other recent games.

Rebhan fanned 10 in both contests, allowing just two hits against Jackson-Reed.

Potomac School took advantage of multiple walks and wild pitches against Jackson-Reed. Anna Castellano had a two-run triple, Butler a two-run single and Rebhan an RBI groundout.

Against St. John’s, Addie Wolff had an RBI single, Parry and Castellano singled and Richardson tripled in the bottom of the fourth inning, then scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

“In the [ISL] tournament we will have to play good defense and get timely hitting,” Loving said.
