It's official: GazetteLeader weather partner AccuWeather puts the temperature at our Falls Church headquarters at 75 degrees as of 2 p.m.

Mother Nature always has the last laugh.

A day after weather prognosticators began pulling back their high-temperature forecasts for today [Jan. 26], they are putting them back up, suggesting that, by midday today, temperatures could top out in a rare-for-January mid-70s.

"Very warm and humid with clouds and sun" is how the GazetteLeader's weather partner, AccuWeather, puts it.

But then the cooldown arrives – by Sunday and Monday, high temperatures are unlikely to reach the 50-degree mark.

But spring can't be too far away: Daily sunset for the local region is now approaching 5:30 p.m.

[Original story, 1/25/24:]

Put the beach umbrellas back in storage – weather prognosticators are saying it's less likely than previously thought that Friday [Jan. 26] might surpass the 70-degree mark.

Still, the upper 60s forecast by the GazetteLeader's weather partner, AccuWeather, is impressive, given how just last week Northern Virginia was awash in vehicles that wouldn't start owing to dead batteries.

The warmer temperatures are fueled by an air flow brought up from the south. But there likely will be only one 60-degree day, and by Sunday night, the thermometer might be low enough for a little bit of snow to mix in with the expected rain.
