DALE CITY – Weather permitting, the northbound I-95 general purpose lanes will have lane closures tonight [May 20] around mile marker 155 between the Dale City Truck-Only Safety Rest Area North and Cardinal Drive for Powells Creek bridge work, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The lane closures along the northbound I-95 general purpose lanes are scheduled to occur as follows (at least one lane will remain open at all times):

  • 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, May 20: One lane closed
  • 10 p.m. Monday, May 20 to 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 21: Two lanes closed
  • 4:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 21: One lane closed

Drivers should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes.

These lane closures are for the final milling and paving and permanent striping of the northbound I-95 general purpose lanes as part of the part of the I-95 over Powells Creek Bridge Rehabilitation Project, which is improving safety and extending the overall life of the northbound and southbound I-95 general purpose lanes bridges over Powells Creek.

The bridges were built in 1963, repaired in 1976 and widened in 1981 and 1996. The project includes repairing steel beams and concrete abutments and piers, replacing bearings, closing deck joints and repainting the bridges. In addition, the deck of the northbound general purpose lanes bridge is being resurfaced. The project is scheduled for completion this summer.
