A 50-year-old man died Feb. 15 after he was dragged onto the tracks by a departing train at the Dunn Loring Metro station when his service dog’s leash got caught in the door, Metro Transit Police said.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. and about 450 feet from the operator’s cab, police said. The operator reportedly performed two safety checks before moving the train, police said.

Rescue personnel took the victim, identified in media reports as Harold Riley, to a hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries. His family has set up a GoFundMe account to cover funeral expenses.
