Local theaters prepping works performed by area youth

Traveling Players, Alden Theatre gearing up new productions

The Alden Theatre of the McLean Community Center will play host to "The Many Disguises of Robin Hood" with performances May 16-17.

A number of upcoming theater productions will spotlight area youths.

• Tysons-based Traveling Players will present two works – “Dracula: A Comic Thriller” and “Jane Eyre” – with performances as part of its Thrills & Chills Festival, running weekends March 9-17 at Tysons Corner Center.

The festival “will breathe new life into intrepid heroines and memorable monsters, with modern twists on beloved novels,” producers said.

Designed for ages 6 and older and running 60 minutes with no intermission “Dracula: A Comic Thriller” features the nieces of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson attempting to stop Count Dracula and his minions rom running rampant in London.

Designed for ages 8 and older and running 85 minutes with no intermission, “Jayne Eyre” is an adaptation of the Charlotte Bronte novel that explores the title character’s journey into young adulthood.

“Dracula” performers are in grades 4-6, while the Jane Eyre cast is in grades 8-12. Cast and crew members from the local area include Greta Brown (Arlington), Kal Collins (Vienna), Finnin Cullen (McLean), Nina Farley (McLean), Ava McElvain (Arlington), Lucy Miller (Arlington), Elise Pisz (McLean), Nora Read (Arlington), Anna Rigby (McLean) and Fiona Sarin (Great Falls).

“Dracula” performances run March 9-10 and 11-17 at 1 p.m., while “Jayne Eyre” is performed the same dates at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15.

• The McLean Community Center Alden Theatre’s spring youth production of Brian Guehring’s “The Many Disguises of Robin Hood” will be presented on Saturday and Sunday, March 16-17 at 2 p.m. each day.

I”n merry ol’ England, the townspeople are overtaxed and unfulfilled,” producers say. “Lucky for them, the mysterious outlaw Robin Hood is outsmarting the rich with clever disguises and returning their funds to the poor. Frustrated by these tricks, the sheriff, his daughter and the prince scheme to capture Robin Hood and maintain control of the taxes.”

The spring show is the Alden’s only self-produced production of the year. The director, designers and production staff are all local theater professionals; the cast of McLean youth includes Catharine Carr, Lyrics Chen, Alexandra Closs, Katherine Polizzi, Aaron Saxe, Zoë Schall, Celeste Webb, Chelsea Webb, Charles Yu, Leah Yu and Noelle Yu.
