The soccer season has been underway for a couple of weeks now for high-school teams in Arlington, with mixed success for those squads.

The Washington-Liberty Generals girls and boys teams each won their opening matches by 2-1 scores over the Annandale Atoms in non-district action.

The boys won at home on goals scored by Evan Oberkirsch and Max Gerber. Caleb Layton had an assist.

Gerber’s goal was unassisted and broke a 1-1 tie, as Washington-Liberty controlled possession for much of the match.

Bryson Halberda and Marcelo Carrasquillo shared the time in goal.

The Washington-Liberty boys are an experienced squad this season, with 13 seniors included on the roster.

The W-L girls won over Annandale with two second-half goals, after trailing 1-0 at halftime.

• The Wakefield Warriors were 1-1-1 after three matches in boys non-district action.

The Warriors blanked the Jefferson Colonials, 3-0, lost to Lewis, 3-1, and tied Alexandria City, 2-2.

Against Jefferson, Erik Vasquez Ayala scored two goals and Lavand Aqwari had the other. Assists went to David Pena, Vajk Dawson and Lis Shala. The Warriors led 2-0 at halftime.

Tayt Korejwo and Jacob Peale scored goals and Brady Keefe and Mike Santos had assists against Alexandria City.

Against Lewis, Andrew Soto scored on a penalty kick for Wakefield.

The Wakefield girls, a young team with a roster that includes only four seniors – Helena Helms, Christine Gillen, Ella Morales and Adeline Harold – opened their season with a 2-0 victory over Lewis.

Helms played on the Wakefield girls basketball team during the winter and was an all-Liberty District selection for her production. This past fall, the busy Helms also was a starter on Wakefield’s girls’ field hockey team, along with Harold, Gillen and Morales.

• The Yorktown Patriots teams, each with rosters that include nine seniors this spring, have struggled to win in the early going, with the boys 0-3 and the girls 1-2.

Both teams have been perennial postseason contenders for district, region and state championships in recent seasons.

The boys have scored a goal in all three games with the losses to South Lakes, 2-1, Robinson, 2-1, and Madison, 4-1.

The Yorktown girls opened the season with a 3-0 victory over South Lakes, then lost to Robinson, 3-1, and Madison, 3-1, in their next two matches.

The dates for the upcoming matches between the three Arlington teams are April 18, when the Yorktown and Wakefield squads play; April 26 when Washington-Liberty and Wakefield meet; and May 7, when W-L and Yorktown clash. The teams play just once each in regular-season action.

The W-L and Wakefield boys teams are coached by the Carrasquillo brothers, Jimmy for W-L and Eddie for Wakefield, giving the showdown a little more interest.
