Looming just ahead is the milestone of 200 career coaching victories for longtime Yorktown High School boys head lacrosse coach Greg Beer.

He earned win number 199 the night of April 25, when host Yorktown defeated the McLean Highlanders, 11-6, in a Liberty District match to improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in league play, with three regular-season games remaining.

“Wow, 200 wins are a lot. I don’t keep track of that, but that’s very good for the program,” Beer said.

What Beer does track is how well his team is playing. The coach liked what he witnessed against McLean and in Yorktown’s previous match, an 11-7 road victory over the Broadneck Bruins, a defending public-school state champion in Maryland, which was 17-0 last season.

“Our defense continues to play very well and our offense has stepped up and solidified, with our midfielders supporting very well,” Beer said.

Yorktown took control with an 8-2 halftime lead against McLean. Gray MacAulay and Hudson Greene each scored three goals and Nate Randles netted a couple.

The win over Broadneck came after Yorktown suffered two straight one-goal overtime losses. The Patriots trailed the Bruins, 3-2, at halftime, then outscored Broadneck, 9-4 in the second half. Green had two goals and four assists. Randles and Eli Pilch each had three goals, with MacAulay, Roger Allenbaugh and Grant Stafford scoring one each.

Yorktown goalie Hayden Whittington made 15 saves and Dylan Lefton won some key faceoffs.

Broadneck has defeated Northern Virginia teams Langley and Madison this season. Langley nipped Yorktown, 9-8, in double overtime and Madison won over the Patriots, 7-6, in OT.
