Three local Little Leagues set to host opening-day ceremonies

Great Falls holds event first scheduled for Saturday, April 6

Of the three Little Leagues in the GazetteLeader’s coverage areas of Fairfax County, one will hold opening ceremonies to kick off the 2024 season the morning of Saturday, April 6 and the others the morning of Saturday, April 13.

Great Falls Little League hosts the April 6 event at its Nike Park complex on Utterback Store Road off Route 7 and near Forestville Elementary School.

A parade of players will march onto the park’s main field beginning at 8 a.m., with welcoming remarks to follow at 8:45 a.m.,  then the announcement of the best team banner winner and the Volunteer of the Year.

The annual first pitch will be thrown at 9 a.m.

A traditional base-running competition between mascots of local elementary schools follows the opening pitch.

The McLean and Vienna leagues hold their opening ceremonies on Saturday morning, April 13. Each begins with parades of players.

The McLean parade begins at 8 a.m. at McLean High School and concludes at the league’s Westmoreland Street complex. There, opening ceremonies will be held on the middle field with recognitions of past accomplishments of teams and players, opening remarks and first pitches.

Patricia Moynihan, president of the McLean Volunteer Fire Department, will throw out a first pitch.

Vienna’s ceremonies begin with a 9 a.m. parade of players onto the middle field at Yeonas Park for the traditional activities. There will be recognitions of last summer’s three postseason champion all-star teams, local high-school senior baseball players who were former Vienna Little Leaguers will be recognized and first pitches, including one thrown by Vienna mayor Linda Colbert, will be tossed.

Varsity high-school baseball and softball players from local schools will attend all three events.

When the ceremonies conclude, games will be held at each of those three complexes on those dates.
