With a 4-1 record in the competition, Oakton High School wrestler Hana Coutts finished second at 145 pounds at the Virginia High School League’s Girls State Open tournament.

Coutts was the highest local finisher in the state of any girls in the GazetteLeader coverage areas. The state tourney was just the second in public-school female wrestling in Virginia.

Two of Coutts ‘wins were by pin, with the two others by technical fall and major decision. The team captain lost in the championship match, 5-4, ending the season with a 30-5 record and 22 pins.

Last season Coutts was fifth in the state at 145.

“Hana is a model scholar-athlete. She’s the first one in the practice room and the last to leave,” Oakton coach David McClary said.

Also for Oakton at the state meet, Kate Crockett placed fourth at 126 pounds. She had three pins. Sofia Pridencio qualified at 152 for Oakton and won three matches and Taryn Parcell wrestled at 126.

Marshall High School’s Kaylinn McKeever was sixth in the state at 185 pounds.  She was one of multiple participants from Marshall, but the only top-six finisher.

Wrestlers from Langley, Madison and McLean high schools had entries, but no top-six finishers.
