Oakton High boys team wins region track and field championship

The Oakton High School boys track and field team gathers with the 6D North Region championship banner and trophy.

With 10 top-three finishes, including four champions, the Oakton Cougars won the recent 6D North Region boys indoor track and field title for the first time in the high-school team’s history.

Oakton amassed 108 points, well ahead of the runner-up South Lakes Seahawks with 58.

Oakton’s two individual champions were Iyasu Yemane in the 1,000-meter race in 2:29.73 and Junior Allen in the 1,600 (4:19.17).

The Oakton boys won the 4x200 (1:34.16) and 4x800 (8:10.16) relays.

Second for Oakton were Wutikuer Kaiwusaer in the shot put and Hyoseo Park in the long jump.

Third were Brad Woodhouse in the 1,000, Derek Lewis in the 1,600, Thomas Gannon in the pole vault and Elijah Simpson in the long jump.

Allen placed fourth in the 1,000 and 3,200 for Oakton. Also fourth were shot putter Andrew Kraden, Logan Ecton in the 300 and the 4x400 relay.

Finishing fifth were Simpson in the 55 dash, Connor Ecklund in the 3,200 and Ecton in the 55 hurdles. Sixth were Tyler Coleman in the 1,600 and Siddarth Luthra in the 500.

Park was seventh in the triple jump. Eighth was Christian Craddock in the long jump, Jad Haichour in the 500, Jalen Bunch in the 55 dash and Lewis in the 3,200. Simpson was ninth in the triple jump and Nathan Obcemea took 10th in the shot.

The Marshall boys placed fifth with 41 points and were led by champion Seth Oliver in the 3,200 (9:33.88), a second from Sean Sanders in the 1,000 and Alexander Oliver in the 500 and a third from Christos Proctor in the 55 dash. Krish Bhalla was sixth in the 55 dash.

Also for Marshall, the 4x800 relay was third and the 4x400 fifth.
