Oakton girls win Concorde District basketball tournament

As third seed, Cougars finish 3-0 in the competition

For the third-seeded Oakton Cougars, it was deja vu all over again as the girls high-school basketball team went 3-0 to win the  Concorde District tournament crown, including an upset for the second year over the higher-seeded Madison Warhawks in the semifinals.

Oakton (20-5) won that game, 32-24, then defeated the fourth-seed Chantilly Chargers in the final, 56-42.

The Concorde tourney title was Oakton’s 20th in program history, all under current head coach Fred Priester, now with 802 career wins.

In the title game, Oakton led 25-19 at halftime, then Chantilly scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to take a 29-25 lead. Oakton responded with a 21-0 run to take control and win going away for the Cougars’ eighth win in nine games.

Sophie Toole had 18 points, seven rebounds and two steals for Oakton. Finley Tarr made 12 of 13 free throws and scored 17, Jocelynn Kinlaw had 14 rebounds and five points, Brooke Chang scored 12 and made two three-pointers, Bailey Zimmerman had seven rebounds and Melissa Ally yanked four rebounds.

In the physical neighborhood clash over host and No. 2 seed Madison, Oakton scored the last nine points of the game and held the Warhawks to just five second-half points.

Madison, which built a 10-0 first-quarter lead and was in front 19-14 at halftime, was an ice cold 1 of 20 shooting from the floor in the second half and 8 of 39 for the game (21 percent). Oakton shot a little better (11 of 45, 24 percent).

Tarr had12 points and six rebounds. Toole had 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks; Kinlaw had two points, 12 rebounds and five blocks; Zimmerman had two steals; and Ally had a steal and two points.

Avery Griepentrog had six points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for Madison.
