Oakton boys 4x800 relay sets record, wins state championship

Other local athletes enjoy strong performances in meet

The lone championship won by a local team at the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state indoor track and field meet was the Oakton Cougars boys 4x800 relay, and in grand fashion. 

The foursome of Junior Allen, Brad Woodhouse, Iyasu Yemane and Tyler Coleman won in a meet and team-record time of 7:52.55 seconds, some eight seconds in front of the runner-up Colgan team.

The relay helped Oakton finished eighth in the team standings. The team previously won district and region championships this winter.

Also for Oakton at the state meet, Yemane finished second in the 1,000 meters, Allen was sixth in the 1,600 and 10th in the 1,000, Woodhouse was seventh in the 1,000 and Derek Lewis eighth in the 1,600.

The Marshall High boys finished 14th, led by a third from Seth Oliver in the 3,200, a fourth from Sean Sanders in the 1,600, a sixth by Alexander Oliver in the 500 and an eighth by the 4x800 relay.

For the Langley High boys team, Jack Pino was eighth in the 300.

In the girls state meet, Langley finished 14th and was led by a second from Lila Waters in the 1,600 and a seventh in the 1,000. Lila Pesavento was eighth in the 1,000, Hazel Calway was eighth in the 3,200, Corinne Jaggard was ninth in the 500, the 4x800 relay was third and the 4x400 was 10th.

For the Oakton girls, Sitota Mesfin was second in the 3,200, Aurora Ayala was fifth in the pole vault, Kylie Taylor was eighth in the shot put and the 4x800 relay was eighth.

For the Marshall girls, Haley Spoden was sixth in the 1,600 and 11th in 3,200.

McLean’s Marie-Odette de Marcellus was third in the girls high jump.

A number of the top finishers at the state meet will participate in the upcoming New Balance national high-school meet in Boston. That competition ends the winter indoor season.
