Marshall, McLean wrestling teams place high in regional meet

Two Statesmen grapplers win individual championships

With two champions and two second-place finishers, the Marshall Statesmen placed third in the recent 6D North Region high-school wrestling tournament.

The McLean Highlanders had one runner-up and five third-place finishers and were a close fourth, with the Madison Warhawks seventh, the Oakton Cougars eighth and the Langley Saxons 12th.

Leading Marshall were individual winners Ethan Lebkisher at 190 pounds and Soran Pirhoun at 215. Lebkisher was 3-0 with two pins and won by a 6-4 decision in the title match. Pirhoun also was 3-0 with a pin, a 5-4 semifinal victory and a 2-1 triumph in the final.

Second for Marshall were Ben Levy (120) and Luis Malone (132). Fourth were Josh Levy (113) and Riffat Pathan (138). Sixth were Aadil Bhalla (106), Nikita Li (126) and Ryan Mazhari (144).

Leading McLean was runner-up William Lewey at 190. Third were Tavian Melvin (113), Jacob Daly (126), Easton Johnson (150), Will Olson (175) and  John Drury (285). Fourth was Bilegt Arslan (120) and Maxwell Kusano (138) was sixth. 

For Madison, Oscar Espanol led the way, finishing second at 175. Henry Novario (150) was third, Clay Monday (285) fourth, Cole Sullivan (120) and Aidan Martinez (126) fifth and sixth were Isaac Bogdewic (132), Thomas Adamson (157) and Luke Salvosa (165).

For Oakton, Alek Martinez (157) finished second. Fourth were William Mitchell (165) and Caiden Sheehan (106). Fifth were Spencer Loyless (132), Ian Lee (138) and Christian Crevoisier (150).

For Langley, Robert Roncskevitz (165) finished second, Boemseok Kang (157) was third and Thomas Swartz (215) fifth.

NOTE: A week prior to the region tournament, McLean won the Liberty District tourney with 175 points. Marshall was second with 168.5. Individual champions for McLean were Daly, Kusano, Will Olson (175) and Lewey. Second were Melvin, Arslan, Johnson and Drury.
