Fairfax County Schools are on spring break next week, but a number of local varsity sports teams won’t be taking time off.

Instead, the squads will be busy playing in various tournaments, locally and out of the area.

In girls softball, the defending Class 6 state champion McLean Highlanders (3-0) will play five games at a spring-break tourney in Myrtle Beach. The Madison Warhawks (1-2), who lost to McLean in last season’s state final, also will be in Myrtle Beach playing multiple games.

The 4-0 Langley Saxons have three softball games scheduled during another spring-break trip.

In baseball, all of the local varsity public-school teams will be involved in spring-break tournaments.

The defending state champion Madison Warhawks (3-0) have five games scheduled in Orlando. Like Madison, the Oakton Cougars (3-1) also have five games on tap, as well, but in Myrtle Beach.

Oakton will take a two-game winning streak into that competition, having defeated West Springfield, 3-1, and West Potomac, 7-6, in non-district contests.

Noah Toole’s extra-inning RBI single to right field provided the game-winning walkoff run for Oakton against visiting West Potomac. Toole was the starting and winning pitcher in five innings of work against West Springfield, with Beau Souders earning a two-inning save.

Jacob Bradshaw had an RBI single and Souders a sacrifice fly in the win. Zach Hansen doubled.

Oakton rallied from a 6-0 deficit against West Potomac, scoring multiple runs as a result of a hit batter, wild pitches, passed balls and a steal of home by Cooper Bradshaw.

The McLean Highlanders and Marshall Statesmen won’t meet, but the Liberty District and neighborhood rivals each are scheduled to play five baseball games in a local tournament at the new multi-field Patriot Park complex near Centreville High School.

Marshall (1-3) recently earned its first win with a 2-0 road victory over the Herndon Hornets. Starter Jonah Maco (two innings) and Nathan Lake (five innings, nine strikeouts) combined for a one-hit shutout.

McLean entered spring-break action with a three-game victory string.

The Langley Saxons have four baseball games scheduled at an out-of-town tourney.

In lacrosse, both the defending state-champion Madison boys and Oakton girls have a couple of games scheduled. Oakton (3-0) will play two contests in Clearwater, Fla., while Madison (3-1) will play locally.

In spring high-school sports like tennis, soccer and track and field, most teams will not be competing during spring break.
