Local players chosen all-region in girls, boys basketball

Highlighted by Anya Rahman’s first-team and girls Player of the Year honors, a number of local players were chosen to the girls and boys all-6D North Region basketball teams for their performances during the 2023-24 high-school season.

In 25 games, the Langley Saxons junior guard/forward averaged 14.3 points per contests, 4.4 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 2.5 assists. She scored 357 points and made 47 three-pointers.

Rahman helped Langley finish with a 21-4 record and earn the top seed in the Liberty District tournament, where the Saxons were second.

She also was chosen as the Liberty District’s girls Player of the Year and made the first team.

Other local first-teamers for the girls were Madison Warhawks’ senior forward Stella Gougoufkas, Oakton Cougars’ sophomore guard Sophie Toole and McLean junior guard/forwards Tatum Olson and Vilte Kaceraukaite.

Making second team on the girls side were Langley junior forward Peyton Daley, Marshall Statesmen senior forward Anna Musgrove, Oakton senior guard Finley Tarr and Madison senior forward Avery Griepentrog.

Toole and Tarr helped Oakton win the Concorde District tournament, then finish second in the region tourney to earn a Class 6 state berth.

Langley’s Amanda Baker was the girls Coach of the Year.

Local boys players chosen first-team all-region were Marshall senior guard Jason Penn and McLean senior forward Isaac Bell. Making second team were Madison senior guard Steven Cruz, McLean senior guard Jeremy Fuchs, Oakton senior forward Noah Toole and Langley senior guard Ryan Bradshaw.

Cruz helped the Madison boys finish second in the Concorde District and region tournaments and earn a state-tourney berth.

• In the girls Independent School League’s AA Division, Potomac School freshman guard Sabrina Anderson and junior guard Catherine LeTendre earned all-league honors. Flint Hill junior guard/forward Raigan McCalla also was chosen all-league.
