A few games into the new season, the defending Class 6 state champion Oakton Cougars in girls lacrosse and the Madison Warhawks in boys had a combined 7-1 record through March 20 high-school action.

Each plays two more matches during the upcoming spring-break week.

Entering those contests, Oakton had a 4-0 mark and Madison was 3-1. Each team returns a number of key players from last season's state-championship team.

Madison has won three straight matches after losing its season opener to Riverside, 8-7.

The Oakton girls opened the season with an 11-8 win over Woodson, a perennial postseason contender.

The Madison girls also stand 3-1, with a 13-9 loss to Western Albermarle as their lone setback.

Other local teams enjoying strong starts are the Langley girls at 5-0, the 2-0 Langley boys and the 2-0 Oakton boys.
