Langley girls second, McLean third in district swim and dive meet

Each squad has multiple top event finishers

McLean's Catherine Hughes won a race and was second in another in the Liberty District girls championship races.

With two individual champions and one winning relay, the Langley Saxons finished second in the recent Liberty District girls swimming and diving championships, with the McLean Highlanders a close third.

Langley amassed 397 points and McLean 377.5. Yorktown won the high-school event with 498.

Gloria Kuang won the 200 individual medley in 2:06.07 for Langley and was second in the 100 butterfly, with Alyssa Webb winning the 100 freestyle in 52.93.

Both swimmers were members of the winning 400 free relay (3:31.04) along with Marina Watson and Ginger Strickland.

Individually, Watson was second in the 100 free and fifth in the 50 free, and Strickland was third in the 200 and 500 free races.

Also for Langley, Kira Thornton finished second in the 100 breaststroke and sixth in the 100 free, Tessa Jones was third in the 100 backstroke, Lara De was fourth in the 500 free, Gretchen Steber was seventh in the 100 free and eighth in the back, and the 200 medley relay was third.

Leading McLean was Catherine Hughes with a victory in the breast (1:03.97) and a second in the IM.

McLean’s medley relay won in 1:46.12, with Catherine Hughes, Danielle Hughes, Ana Falzone and Eleanor Murphy making up the foursome.

In individual events, Danielle Hughes was second in the back and third in the fly, Murphy was third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free, and Falzone was sixth in the fly and eighth in the IM.

McLean’s 200 free relay finished second.

For the fifth-place Marshall Statesmen, Emma Watts was third in the breast and sixth in the IM.

In girls Liberty District diving, McLean’s Jocelyn Brooks won with a 345.95 point total.
