JULY:

• Madison High School senior standout Bryce Eldridge is selected in the first round of the Major League baseball draft by the San Francisco Giants with the 16th pick overall. A few weeks earlier, the two-way standout received Virginia’s Gatorade Player of the Year in high-school baseball.

• The Vienna American Little League Major All-Stars win district and state tournament baseball championships, then finish 2-2 and reach the semifinals at the Southeast Regional tourney.

• The Vienna American age 8-10 Little League All-Stars win district, state and Southeast Region Tournament of Champions baseball titles with a perfect 18-0 record, outscoring opponents 212-15.

• The McLean Majors Little League All-Stars win a state girls softball championship, as do the McLean age 9-10 softball All-Stars.

• The Tuckahoe Tigers win the Northern Virginia Swimming League’s Division 1 title with a 5-0 record, the team’s second such crown in three years and fifth overall.

• The top seed Vienna Post 180 American Legion baseball team repeats as the District 17 tournament champion.

• The Oakton diving team finishes 5-0 to win the top division of the summertime’s Northern Virginia Swimming League for a second straight year.

AUGUST:

• The high-school football season begins for area teams, with many squads playing two regular-season games in the month.

• Longtime Langley High School golf coach Al Berg announces he will retire from that position at season’s end. Berg was the head coach since 1996, leading Langley to multiple district, region and state championships and dozens of dual-match victories.

SEPTEMBER:

• Former Flint Hill School boys and girls head basketball coach Win Palmer dies. Palmer’s boys team at the private school won a Division I state championship. He also was the athletic director at Flint Hill.

• The Langley High School golf team wins district- and region-tournament championships.

• Pat Deegan is hired as the new head girls basketball coach at McLean High School. Deegan coached multiple girls teams before McLean and to much success. He is a member of the Virginia High School League’s Sports Hall of Fame. His Madison High teams won two state championships.

OCTOBER:

• The Oakton High School girls field hockey team wins district- and region-tournament championships, and reaches the Class 6 state-tournament semifinals.

• The Potomac School golfers win a conference-tournament title after going 10-0 in dual matches in regular-season play.

• The Langley High School girls and boys cross country teams win district titles.

• Langley and Madison high school girls volleyball teams win district crowns. Madison then goes on to win a region title, with Langley second. Langley then days later wins the Class 6 state title.

NOVEMBER:

• The Madison High School football team wins a fourth straight region championship.

• The Flint Hill School football team wins a conference championship and earns a Division I private-school state tourney berth.

• The Potomac School girls soccer team wins conference and state titles.

• Oakton High School cross country runner Junior Allen wins district and region boys crowns then finishes third in the state.

• The Potomac School boys cross country team repeats as conference champions.

• Langley High School volleyball coach Susan Shifflett wins her 500th career match.

DECEMBER:

• The basketball and winter sports seasons begin for local high-school teams.
