Surrounded by family, teammates and coaches Flint Hill School football standout Josh Clarke recently signed a letter of intent to play college football at Virginia Tech.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Clarke was a wide receiver and runningback on offense for Flint Hill’s high-school team this past season, he was a defensive back on defense, a kick returner on special teams and a Huskies’ captain.

For his performance during the 2023 campaign, Clarke was chosen as a first team Division I all-state private-school player on both offense and defense. His efforts helped Flint Hill win the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and earn a Division I state playoff berth as the No. 4 seed.

Clarke caught 21 passes for 417 yards and five touchdowns. He ran for 123 yards and four TDs. He returned kicks for 92 yards.

On defense, Clarke had five interceptions for 53 yards in returns, broke up nine passes and tallied 25 tackles, four for losses.

He also was chosen first-team all-state as a wide receiver his junior season and made second team as a defensive back.

“Josh is a relentless, dedicated athlete who puts in maximum effort,” Flint Hill coach Kirk Peterson said. “In addition to his physical prowess, Josh has mental resilience that sets him apart.”

Virginia Tech recruited Clarke primarily as a defensive back, but Peterson believes he might have to chance to also get time as a wide receiver.

“He is so long and that allows him to make a play on the ball as a defensive back or wide receiver,” Peterson said.

In Flint Hill’s state-playoff semifinal game against Trinity Episcopal, Clarke had five catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, ran for 12 yards and a score, and on defense had an interception.

Prior to transferring to and playing for private-school Flint Hill, Clarke was an all-district public-school player for the Alexandria City High School team.

Coaches from Virginia Tech attended Flint Hill’s games this season recruiting Clarke, who will graduate from Flint Hill in coming days and begin taking classes at Virginia Tech in January.
