Josh Cook was in his first season coaching the Yorktown High School baseball team.

Eight months after being hired as the new head baseball coach at Yorktown High School, Josh Cook has been let go from that position with a bit more than a month remaining in the regular season.

A school official confirmed that Cook, a 2013 Yorktown graduate and former varsity player for the Patriots, was dismissed April 9 because of remarks he made during an open-mic comedy routine at a venue that was a non-school and non-team function. Some of those remarks came to light on social media.

School officials were made aware of the remarks and the matter proceeded from there.

Cook did not respond when contacted by the GazetteLeader.

Yorktown director of student activities Mike Krulfeld said the situation was sudden and unfortunate, but he could say nothing further.

Assistant coach Nick Meyers will run the Yorktown squad for the remainder of the 2024 season. Meyers has previously coached youth baseball in Arlington and works with a Northern Virginia baseball academy.

“Hopefully the season can continue in a positive spin,” Krulfeld said.

Cook was not a faculty member at the school or otherwise an employee with Arlington Schools. He spent the previous four high-school seasons as an assistant baseball coach at Oakton High School. He has also coached travel baseball teams in Northern Virginia.

Yorktown’s season was going well under Cook. A 6-5 comeback home win over the McLean Highlanders on April 8 gave the Patriots a 8-3 overall record and 3-1 mark in the Liberty District. That was his last game as the coach.
