Yorktown club ice hockey team returns home, earns blowout win

Victory moves Patriots back in first place in Patrick Division

After three straight road matches, the Yorktown Patriots ice hockey club team returned home to Medstar Iceplex for a Feb. 9 high-school contest, and  soundly defeated John Champe/Lightridge, 8-3.

Yorktown improved to 8-3 and moved back into first place in the Patrick Division of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League.

In the match, Yorktown surrendered an early first-period goal but then turned on the offense to take control.

Seven different players scored goals for the Patriots. Peyton Tien had two goals. Logan McGraw, Ellie Prantner, Alexi Lautala, Henry Dwyer, John Chistolini and Benson Kluger each had one.

The goals came with the help of 11 assists. Bennett Haas had five assists, while Roger Allenbaugh and McGraw each had two and Will Schryver and Will O’Sullivan had one.

The Patriots limited John Champe/Lightridge to just 14 shots.

Yorktown goalie Ander Andreev made 11 saves. The rest of the Yorktown lineup included Jamie Hardie, Sophia Matusevich, Alex Olsen, James Gan and Brendan Thompson.

The Patriots head to the Ashburn Icehouse in Loudoun County on Friday, Feb. 16 to face the Broad Run Spartans at 8 p.m. in their last regular-season match. The playoffs follow.

Following the playoffs, Yorktown ends its season with the annual “Battle of Arlington” against the Washington-Liberty Generals on March 8 at Medstar Iceplex. The Generals play in a different league.
