Four Arlington athletes win region track and field championships

Wakefield girls finish highest among Arlington teams in fifth place

Four athletes from Arlington high schools won individual titles at the girls and boys 6D North Region indoor track and field championships held last week in Prince George’s County.

Washington-Liberty had the most champions with three. Jonah Friedman won the boys shot put with a throw of 53-feet, 73/4 inches, Ian Naff won the boys 500-meter race in 1:07.29 and Alexandra Malone won the girls pole vault at 11-feet.

Friedman’s winning distance was significantly farther than a week earlier when he won the Liberty District meet with a put of 53 feet flat. Friedman has won multiple meets this season.

Yorktown High School’s Peter Oliveira was a double champion. He won the boys 55 hurdles in 7.77 seconds and the high jump at 6-2. His time in the hurdles was a school record.

In the team competition, the Wakefield girls finished the highest among Arlington teams, in fifth with 39 points, 40 behind champion Westfield.

One of the athletes leading the Wakefield girls was Kenedy Shields. She was second in the high jump, eighth in the 55 hurdles and ninth in the long jump.

Hosanna Connor was second in the pole vault and fourth in the triple jump.

Wakefield distance runner Elizabeth Coe was third in the 1,600, fourth in the 1,000 and anchored the second-place 4x800 relay. Addison Young, Quincy Daigle and Lilly Armstrong also ran on that relay.

Young was sixth in the 1,000 and Kennedy McClary was seventh in the 300.

For the Washington-Liberty girls, Thalia Lynch was second in the 55 dash; the 4x200 relay was third; Ella Kaplan was fifth in the 55 hurdles, sixth in the 500, seventh in the triple jump and 10th in the long jump; Amela Male was sixth in the shot; Morgan Brown was sixth in the 300; Annabel Friedman was seventh in the shot; and Therese Johansson was seventh in the 500.

Leading the Yorktown girls was Lanyi Stroud with eighths in the 300 and 55- dash and the 4x400 relay was third.

In the boys meet, Yorktown’s Jack Levine finished a close second in the 3,200 with a time of 9:33.93. He was barely nipped by Seth Oliver of Marshall in 9:33.88.

Yorktown’s Colin McCormack was third in the shot and Reid Dalley seventh in the 3,200.

Yorktown’s sixth-place team finish was the highest among the three Arlington boys teams.

For the Washington-Liberty boys, David Rosman was fifth in the pole vault and the 4x200 relay was fourth.

Leading the Wakefield boys with the highest finishers were Christopher Gilpi with a second in the 55 dash and Bryant Cruz-Lemus with a second in the high jump.

Wakefield’s Liam Keish was fourth in the 500, Ben Chapuis was fifth in the high jump and eighth in the triple jump, Antonio Smith was sixth in the 300, Silas Lesparance was sixth in the high jump, Harrison Greenberg was seventh in the 1,600, Aaron Klug was seventh in the 55 hurdles, Cadyn Johnson was seventh in the pole vault and the 4x200 relay was third.
