Yorktown boys lacrosse coach, players achieve big milestones

Victory was 200th in career for team's longtime leader

It was milestone night for the Yorktown Patriots boys lacrosse team the evening of April 29, as three big achievements were reached by team members in a 14-3 road victory over the Washington-Liberty Generals.

Longtime Yorktown head coach Greg Beer won his 200th career game. He has coached the high-school team since 2006.

Senior attack Hudson Greene became the program’s all-time career goals scorer by netting five goals in the win. He broke the record of 143 career goals, held by current Yorktown assistant coach Joe Crawford.

Green previously had become the program’s all-time leader in assists and points scored, breaking those marks in earlier matches this spring.

Yorktown senior goalie Hayden Whittington made his 400th career save in the outing against Washington-Liberty.

The win, coupled with Yorktown’s 16-2 victory over the Jefferson Colonials the next night, improved the team’s overall record to 9-4 and 4-1 in the Liberty District, with one regular-season match to play May 2 against the Herndon Hornets.

“It takes a village,” Beer said about the 200 career wins. “It takes the contributions and support of all the assistant coaches, the players, the school administration and the parents. It’s not done alone.”

Greene had similar remarks about his accomplishments, crediting the coaching staff for having trust in his abilities, when he became a starter as a sophomore.

“They let me play and my teammates pass me the ball and help me score all of those points for three seasons,” Greene said. “I couldn’t have done this without all of them.”

Yorktown took a 3-0 first-quarter lead against W-L and was on its way to victory.

Greene’s record-breaking goal came on a back-handed shot from close range, as he attacked from behind the net, scoring with 8:24 to play in the second period to up Yorktown’s lead to 5-2.

Also among Yorktown goal scorers were  Nate Randles (four) and Evan Beeman, Gray MacAulay, Vaughan Gilberg, Luke Sanne and Grant Stafford with one each. Griffin Morse added two assists and Randles three. Whittington made nine saves.

Scoring goals for Washington-Liberty were Luke Funck, Connor McDonald and Daniel Kirsch.

Alexander Conner was busy in goal for the Generals, making multiple saves.

The loss snapped W-L’s four-match winning streak, giving the Generals an overall record of 5-5 and 3-2 in the Liberty District.
