To the editor: Julius “J.D.” Spain Sr. has our first-place vote in the Democratic County Board primary, for many reasons.

He has a depth of experience spanning more than 30 years, including 26 of honorable service as a U.S. Marine, working in the U.S. Senate on Capitol Hill, serving and then leading the local chapter of the NAACP and establishing a successful track record in the private sector.

Additionally, Spain has been a tireless award-winning community activist and volunteer for numerous county organizations, commissions and county schools, which his three grown children all attended and graduated from.

Spain believes we are “one Arlington”; we all share the same concerns and goals for our community: public health and safety, including mental-health support; safe, quality schools; economic security; environmental sustainability; and smart development and housing choices.

With his diversity of experience that combines service, leadership, management know-how and the desire to listen to all points of view, we believe Spain is the only candidate for County Board who can truly represent all voices in Arlington, from every ZIP code. His profound understanding of the community, and recognition of the crucial role of cultural perspectives in policy formation, sets him apart.
