Editorial: Don't be afraid to swim in own lane, local leaders

Arlington does not need an independent foreign policy, despite hectoring of activists

Perhaps because far-left activists rightly or wrongly see Arlington County Board members as easy pickings, like lame gazelles in the African veld unable to fend off packs of ravenous hyenas, they have been hectoring board members to adopt a resolution or statement about the current situation in the Mideast – presumably, a tacit (or more) denunciation of Israel.

To their credit, Arlington County Board members in February refused to rise to the bait. The board chairman, Libby Garvey, said it wasn’t a local governing body’s place to be establishing an independent foreign policy. The other members kept mum, leaving it to Garvey to drive home the point.

And while they appeared somewhat more pliant in responding to activists who showed up again in April, word is local leaders do not want to get themselves enmeshed in this.

We have hopes elected officials have enough backbone to not be pushed around by a small group of activists trying to impose their will through endless repetition of their demands.

Arlington does not need an independent foreign policy. As their thought process continues, we can only hope board members are heeding advice that channels the immortal words of Sheriff Buford T. Justice in “Smokey and the Bandit”: “Oh, you can THINK about it. But dooooooon’t do it.”
