A draft of the proposed marker honoring the history of Arlington's Fire Station #8 and its predecessors in the Halls Hill/High View Park community.

In preparation for a formal dedication ceremony in coming months, an historical marker highlighting the history of Arlington’s Fire Station #8 is in the final stages of approval.

The county’s Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board (HALRB) got a look at the proposed design at its March 20 meeting, another step on the way to final approval.

The marker uses text and photos to explore 10 highlights in the station’s history, spanning from its beginnings in 1918 as a volunteer unit to serve the segregated African-American communities of Halls Hill and High View Park to the present day.

The station is located in the 4800 block of Langston Boulevard, about three blocks west of North Glebe Road. It was constructed on the site of a previous fire station, which had dated to the early 1960s.

In addition to the marker, the station also will house a display of memorabilia related to its more than century of history, and also will feature a lobby video exploring the history in more detail.
