From Arlington to McLean to Great Falls and into Oakton and Vienna, the many teams in the GazetteLeader’s coverage areas are set to go for the beginning of the 2024 summertime Northern Virginia Swimming league season, which opens Saturday morning, June 15.
Starters’ horns will sound at 9 a.m. to begin the first races for the 17-division league’s 102 teams, which have a short five-week regular season followed by two more weekends of postseason competitions.
In the league’s top Division 1, the defending champion Tuckahoe Tigers of McLean start defensive of their second title in three summers by visiting Arlington’s Donaldson Run Thunderbolts in a June 15 meet. Donaldson Run finished fourth in the division last summer.
Also in June 15 Division 1 action, McLean’s Highlands Whomping Turtles host Arlington’s Overlee Flying Fish and McLean’s Chesterbrook Tiger Sharks host Old Keene Mill from Burke. Overlee was second in Division 1 a year ago and Chesterbrook third. Old Keene Mill is a newcomer to the top division.
Last summer’s Division 4 champion Oakton Otters host the Langley Wildthings of McLean in a Division 2 week-one showdown. It will be an all-McLean clash in Division 3 with the Hamlet Green Feet hosting the Kent Gardens Dolphins.
The Vienna Aquatic Club Gators won Division 5 last summer and moved up one position, where they host Vienna Woods in an all-neighborhood opening meet in Division 4.
Virginia Run visits Vienna’s Cardinal Hill Cardinals in Division 5, with Springboard at Vienna’s Dunn Loring Dolphins in Division 6.
Arlington’s Dominion Hills Thunder Ducks won Division 8 last summer and start their new campaign in Division 7, hosting Rolling Hills on June 15.
Vienna’s Lakevale Estates Dolphins visit Fox Hunt in Division 8.
Vienna’s Shouse Village Sharks won Division 14 a year ago, have moved up two spots to Division 12 and host Rolling Forest in week one. Also in Division 12, the Great Falls Rapids host Stratford to begin their 2024 slate.
In other swimming action, the Dominion Country Club League began its season on June 8 with the Westwood team of Vienna and the Riverbend squad of Great Falls winning their opening meets in the league’s top division.
The Colonial Swimming League begins its summer campaign on Saturday, June 15, with the Arlington Knights of Columbus Holy Mackerels and the Fort Myer Squids having away meets on that date.
Those two leagues, like the NVSL, have five-week regular seasons, followed by two weeks of postseason events.
