Oakton field hockey player, coach chosen as state's best

Duo led team to district and region championships

Oakton High School's Esther Eum holds the region championship trophy her team won this fall.

Oakton High School senior midfielder Esther Eum was chosen as the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 Player of the Year in girls field hockey for her play this fall and Oakton head coach Erin Keenan is the Class 6 Coach of the Year.

Eum, a Lehigh University commit, led the team with 13 assists and added five goals this fall. The two-time team captain also earned 6D North Region Player of the Year honors this fall as well as being chosen the Concorde District’s Player of the Year.

Eum helped Oakton win district and region tournaments this fall, reach the semifinals of the Class 6 state tourney and compile a program single-season best record of 22-1.

Eum will participate at the USA Junior Women’s National Team Selection Camp in December.

Keenan was in her fourth season as Oakton’s head coach. She also was chosen as district and region Coach of the Year.

Three other local players, all sophomores, chosen Class 6 all-state were second-teamers Marisa Rubano (midfielder) of Oakton, Paige Pehrkon (midfielder) of Marshall High School Teagan Hastings (defender) of Madison High School. 

There are no honorable mention all-state selections.
