McLean wrestlers place third at Battle of the Bridge

Highlanders are led by an individual champion and two who finished third

The McLean High School wrestling team gather with the third-place trophy at the Battle of the Bridge competition.

Led by individual champion Jacob Daly at 126 pounds and third-place finishers William Lewey at 190 and heavyweight John Drury, the McLean Highlanders finished third at the 55-team Battle of the Bridge wrestling tournament at Woodbridge High School.

McLean had 149 points. Orange County won with 157.5 and Western Branch was second at 151.5.

Daly finished 5-0 with two pins in his weight class. He pinned Westfield's Brendan Sholders in 4:31 in the final match. His other pin was in 1:12 and Daly's decisions were by 14-8, 6-4 and 11-4 scores.

Lewey won his third-place consolation match by a 4-3 score, and Drury won his by a 5-1 count.

McLean's Phillip Davis was sixth at 132 and Tavian Melvin was eighth at 113.

Other wrestlers scoring in the tournament for McLean were Bilegt Arslan (120), Kennedy Munoz (138), Noah Kilgore (144), Ryan Curry (150), Easton Johnson (157), Nathaniel Thaler (165), Will Olson (175) and Spencer May-Stoffel (215).

For the Langley High School team, Robert Roncskevitz was second at 165 and Thomas Swartz was seventh at 215. 

Roncskevitz finished 4-1 with two first-period pins and 10-7 and 6-3 victories. He lost in the final, 11-2. Langley finished 33rd in the team standings.

Potomac School participated in the competition.
