The defending Class 6 state champion McLean Highlanders (17-2 overall) finished 12-0 in Liberty District regular-season girls softball play this spring and will be the top seed in the upcoming tournament, a title it also won the last two seasons

McLean defeated Yorktown, 10-0, and Washington-Liberty, 8-3, in its final two district girls high-school softball games. Those two victories gave the team a six-game winning streak with one regular-season contest remaining against non-district opponent Colgan (14-1).

Hailey Simpson fanned seven to get the win against W-L.

With the bat, Madeline Staats hit a solo homer and singled, Kaitlyn Cole had a two-run double and later and RBI groundout and Emory Hadden had a two-run single. Genevieve Fagan and Chelsea Engles had run-scoring doubles.

Elise Walker had  three hits and two RBI against Yorktown and Simpson pitched the five-inning shutout.

Also with the bat, Fagan had a two-run double and RBI single, Riley Staats had an RBI single, E.K. Templer had a couple of hits, Madeline Staats had an RBI, Hadden had a sacrifice fly, and others with hits were Qiana Holmes and Alexandra Kirk.

The Highlanders will host any game it plays in the district tourney. By earning the district's top seed, McLean earned a berth into the 6D North Region tournament, where it finished second last spring.

NOTE: McLean has won 17 straight games against district rivals over two seasons.
