The post-season awards continued for the girls state volleyball champion Langley Saxons when senior setter and hitter Chloe Hokenson was chosen as the Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state Player of the Year and Susan Shifflett was picked as the Class 6 Coach of the Year.

Langley won the recent state championship with a 3-0 tournament record, with Hockenson having 15 kills and multiple service aces in the championship match against Battlefield.

For the season, Hokenson had 515 assists, 253 digs, 203 kills, 96 aces and 20 blocks. She also was chosen first-team all-state last season and was this season’s Liberty District and 6D North Region Player of the Year.

For her career, Hokenson had 1,067 assists, 508 digs, 456 kills and 68 blocks.

Hokenson plans to continue her volleyball playing career at Emerson College in Boston.

Shifflett has been Langley’s only coach in program history, starting the team as a varsity sport in 1999. Her teams have won three state titles and finished second twice.

In 2023, Langley had a 27-3 record, giving Shifflett 502 career victories and 130 losses as the Saxons’ coach.

Her 502 wins are fourth most as a VHSL head coach.

Joining Hokenson on the 2023 Class 6 all-state first team was Langley junior hitter Ana Toumazatos and Marshall High School senior Samia Sayd.

Sayd helped Marshall finish second in the Liberty District tourney and reach the semifinals of the region competition.

Madison High freshman Laila Chadwick made second-team. She helped the Warhawks win Concorde District and region-tournament championships and advance to the Class 6 state semifinals. Langley’s three losses this season were all to Madison.
