Langley, Oakton girls basketball teams have combined 17-1 record

Finley Tarr and the Oakton High School girls basketball team have an 8-1 overall record.

As the high-school basketball season pauses for a few days over the Christmas holiday, two local girls teams have a combined 17-1 overall record entering the break.

The Langley Saxons of the Liberty District are 9-0 and the Oakton Cougars of the Concorde District stand 8-1. The teams resume play Dec. 27 for three games each at the Oakton Holiday Classic.

Langley's latest two victories were over the Herndon Hornets, 53-26, and the Yorktown Patriots, 54-31, in league contests. Oakton's last game before the pause was a 63-31 rout over the host Dominion Titans in a non-district game.

For Langley in the two wins, Anya Rahman, Bri Borcherding, Peyton Daley, Vicky Zawisza and Maddie Shamloo were top scorers. Rahman had 14 and 13 points in the wins and added seven steals and five assists against Yorktown. Borcherding had eight points and 11 rebounds in that game, Zawisza scored 13, Meave Christie had four points and seven rebounds and Shamloo had seven rebounds, five assists and four points.

Shamloo scored 12 against Herndon.

Oakton built a big halftime lead over Dominion and was in control the rest of the way.

In other girls action, the McLean Highlanders edged the visiting South Lakes Seahawks, 48-45, in non-district action Dec. 21 to even their record at 4-4. Tatum Olson and Alyssa Evans made multiple three-point baskets for McLean and on defense Vilte Kacerauskate had a block and a steal leading to a layup.

* The four-time defending Class 6 state champion Madison Warhawks (4-7) finished 1-2 at a holiday tournament in Florida. 

Leading scorer Stella Gougoufkas was sick and missed Madison's first two games. 

The Warhawks' win was over McDowell, 34-33, when Avery Griepentrog made a game-winning, walkoff running 12-foot jump shot in the lane. Sara Becker scored 11 points in the win and Bella Lozier and Jada Ramos-Diggs (four assists) scored six each.
 

In Madison's 43-29 loss to Liverpool, Maya Mathis scored eight points, Perkins had six points and six rebounds and Griepentrog had four points and six boards.

Madison lost its final game to Ponte Vedra, 49-39. Lillian Perkins scored nine in defeat, Griepentrog added seven, Lozier had six, Becker and Mathis four each and Gougoufkas three.
