Letter: Is new Fairfax GOP leader under spell of Donald Trump?

'Condolences [to Republicans] if their leader is going to espouse a lot of extreme MAGA nonsense in a full-throated support of Donald Trump.'

To the editor: Congratulations to the Republicans in Fairfax County for selecting a woman for the first time in their history to lead them [“New Party Head Aims to Rebuild Relevance of Fairfax GOP,” April 18]. For it’s women who are the backbone of our parties.

But condolences, if their leader is going to espouse a lot of extreme MAGA nonsense in a full-throated support of Donald Trump.

Facts and truth matter. In her interview with the GazetteLeader, Katie Gorka states “his policies are what the country needs.” What policies is she talking about? Which ones?

Just to name a few: Trump tried to end America’s democracy by overturning an election; he subverted the Constitution and the rule of law; he added $8 trillion to our country’s national debt; and he gave corporations and the “1 percent” a tax cut while the hard-working citizens got next to nothing.

Then she states, in his first tenure, “he helped the economy to grow, he grew jobs.” No he didn’t. He was the president since Herbert Hoover leaving office having fewer jobs than when he entered office.

She further states, “He kept the nation safe.” Again, he didn’t. The nation was in total chaos from day one. An example, in the face of the COVID pandemic that killed over 1.2 million Americans, Trump’s remedy was to deny the pandemic, telling people it would be over in a few days. It took a real president, Joe Biden, to finally get injections into people’s arms and stop the pandemic.

If this is the way Ms. Gorka is going to comport herself, she will have squandered an opportunity. How very sad.
