Vienna officials are using federal funds to support water-main initiatives.

The town of Vienna will use an additional $1.35 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to improve water mains.

The Vienna Town Council unanimously agreed Jan. 30 to spend the funds with Crown Construction Service Inc., which will install new water mains and meters, repair aging hydrants and valves, and take other measures to bolster the functionality of the town’s water system.

The Vienna Department of Public Works will prioritize the contractor’s improvements based on water-main-break data, and coordinate those efforts with concurrent town projects.

Vienna officials will post information about the selected projects on the town’s Website. Before work at those sites begins, the town will provide more details and a point of contact for residents who will be affected by the construction.

The latest spending brings to $3.6 million the amount the Council has approved for water-main work in the last year.

The Town Council in February 2022 agreed to spend $1 million in 2020 capital-improvement bond funding for such work. Last September, the Council approved $1.25 million from the first tranche of ARPA funds. The $1.35 million expenditure on Jan. 30 came from Phase 2 of ARPA funding.
