The Vienna Police Department on Jan. 14 welcomed its newest member, Officer Sam Saus.

Before joining the department, Saus spent a year with the Arlington County Sheriff’s Department.

Born in Egypt, Saus is fluent in Arabic. He moved to New York City with his family when he was a teenager. He obtained an associate’s  degree in information technology, and then spent many years working in the mental-health field as an aide to those in need of therapy.

Saus for the next 12 weeks will be mentored by a field-training instructor, who closely will observe and guide his performance in various areas, such as officer safety, traffic enforcement, interactions with the community, report writing, criminal investigations, handling vehicular accidents and numerous other aspects integral to a law-enforcement officer’s responsibilities.
