The Vienna Arts Society (VAS) will cap its “Take a Seat Vienna Returns” fund-raising initiative with a celebration and auction of painted benches Nov. 11 at the Vienna Community Center.

Thirty-nine members of the nonprofit arts organization, a local design group, a class of young artists and 40 bench sponsors took part in the initiative out of a “love of art and a collaborative purpose in creating a community that is vibrant, beautiful and welcoming for all,” VAS officials said.

“Take a Seat Vienna Returns” began 18 months ago with Vienna furniture maker Ralph Reinecke hand-building each cypress bench, which then were painted in a dazzling variety of ways by VAS members.

VAS invites local residents to attend the celebration whether or not they plan to bid on benches. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Award-winning James Madison High School senior Sammi Wallace will play music while the public views all 40 painted benches in one place. International champion auctioneer Brian Damewood and his team later will find a home for each bench.

Tickets cost $20 and cover food and drink from local businesses. Children under age 12 are free.
