A number of code amendments could be forthcoming

Fairfax County supervisors will hold a public hearing May 7 at 4 p.m. to discuss proposed county-code amendments to pertaining to right-of-way afforded to pedestrians.

State code on July 1, 2023, changed from requiring motorists to yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks to mandating that drivers stop for pedestrians at non-signalized pedestrian crossings on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less.

The proposed amendments will allow the Board of Supervisors to provide, by ordinance, for the installation and maintenance of highway signs at non-signalized, marked crosswalks to require drivers to stop for pedestrians crossing or attempting to cross the highway at the locations where such signs are installed.

The amendments also will update county code to prohibit the overtaking and passing of vehicles stopped for pedestrians, which is in accordance with the current state code.

Questions regarding these proposed amendments may be directed to the Fairfax County Department of Transportation at (703) 877-5600.

The public hearing will take place in the Board Auditorium of the Fairfax County Government Center at 12000 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax. Live coverage will be available on Channel 16 and via online streaming at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/cableconsumer/channel-16/live-video-stream. Audio of the meeting can be accessed at (703) 324-7700.

Those wishing to testify via video must register online or by phone no later than 9 a.m. on the day preceding the hearing. Phone-testimony registration closes at noon on the day of the hearing.
