Springtime initiative aims to connect McLean residents with trees

Foundation will guide homeowners in selecting, caring for native species

The McLean Trees Foundation again is offering its expertise to assist residents wishing to plant native trees that are appropriate to their properties.

The Neighborhood Tree program emphasizes homeowner involvement and long-term care of trees. To date, almost 70 trees have been planted under the initiative across McLean.

“We guide you in the selection of a native tree. We deliver the tree. We help you and/or your family plant the tree and we show you how to maintain it,” said Carol Wolter, the organization’s chair. “It is a great program for families.”

Volunteers visit with homeowners to discuss the program, review the property and suggest the right tree for a specific location. Under the subsidized program, the homeowner pays $100 for a native tree ranging in height from 6 to 12 feet.

“Native trees increase biodiversity, enhance ecosystems, provide shelter for wildlife, improve our health and environment, increase property values and reduce heating and cooling costs,”  Wolter said. “In short, trees contribute to our well-being.”
