The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) will present it SoberRide initiative during Cinco de Mayo.

For 12 hours starting at noon on Sunday, May 5, those who may have had too much to drink during the festivities can avail themselves of a free ride home.

“Over a third of U.S. traffic fatalities during Cinco de Mayo involve drunk drivers according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said Kurt Erickson, WRAP’s president. His organization conducts the initiative in collaboration with Lyft.

The SoberRide effort also is in effect for  St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Halloween and the winter holidays through and including New Year’s.

Since 1991, WRAP’s SoberRide program has provided 89,725 free safe rides home to would-be drunk drivers in the Greater Washington area.
