• The McLean High School journalism program recently was honored by the General Assembly for receiving the First Amendment Freedom Award for the seventh consecutive year.

The accomplishments “are the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-journalists and the guidance of their teachers, and the unwavering support of their facilities and the entire McLean High School community,” noted the resolution, which passed both houses of the legislature without dissent.

The First Amendment award is presented annually at the  Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association convention.

• Fairfax County Public Schools has been honored by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation as one of the “Best Communities for Music Education.”

Now in its 25th year, the designation is awarded to districts that show exceptional dedication to providing access to music education to all students. Districts are evaluated on funding, graduation requirements, music-class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for music programs.

Fairfax County has been honored with the recognition 11 times and is among 975 school districts acknowledged in 2024.

• Marketing students from Centreville High School and the Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall program will run their Prom Dress Shop for the prom season through April 14 at Centreville High School.

The marketing students apply retail-marketing and visual-merchandising skills learned throughout the school year to transform their classroom into the Prom Dress Shop.

“This is an excellent opportunity to accomplish several goals at once,” said Miranda Schick, a marketing teacher for the school system. “First, students apply learned marketing lessons to a real-world retail environment. Second, they support the School Board’s goals of helping students succeed beyond the classroom through their ‘Portrait of a Graduate’ skills. These include communication, collaboration, critical thinking and global-citizenship skills.”

The shop is located in the modular classroom building near the stadium in the student parking lot of the high school, outside of Door 12. Any area student – not just those from Fairfax County Public Schools – who does not have the funds to purchase a prom dress can choose from hundreds of new dresses donated by Macy’s. They must show a valid student ID or other form of school identification.

Hours of operation for the upcoming weekend include Friday, April 12 from 5-8 p.m.; Saturday, April 13 from 2 to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, April 14 from 1-4 p.m.

Since 2006, Centreville High School and Fair Oaks Classroom on the Mall students have partnered to collect dresses as a way to combine their interests in fashion with community service.
