PARKING-LOT RESURFACING SET FOR CLEMYJONTRI PARK: The Fairfax County Park Authority will soon begin resurfacing and painting the Clemyjontri Park parking lot, officials said.

The lot will be closed during the resurfacing and painting, but the park will remain open.

Work will begin starting Tuesday, Oct. 24, and is expected to conclude on Thursday, Oct. 26, as weather permits.

The work has been specifically targeted during the middle of the week to minimize the inconvenience to park patrons. Clemyjontri Park, one of the most popular parks in Fairfax County, regularly receives high numbers of visitor traffic during the weekends.

The park is located at 6317 Georgetown Pike in McLean.

“While the parking lot is closed, visitors are encouraged to use the new Park Amenity Locator website to help identify alternate recreation options if needed,” Park Authority officials said.

MPA PROGRAMS LINKED TO NEW EXHIBITION: McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) will host two upcoming events in connection with its “(Not) Strictly Painting 14” exhibition.

On Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., MPA curator and artistic director Nancy Sausser will host an in-person artist talk featuring some of the artists in the exhibition, which focuses on the depth and breadth of paintings – or works related in some way to painting – from artists throughout the Mid-Atlantic area.

On Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 11a.m., Sausser will host Tea & Talk, presented by the Rotary Club of McLean. Guests are invited to enjoy a cup of tea and discuss the exhibition.

Both events will be held at the MPA galleries, located at the McLean Community Center. To register for the Oct. 12 event, go to https://tinyurl.com/notstrictlypaintingartisttalk; to register for the Oct. 19 event, go to https://tinyurl.com/notstrictlypaintingteaandtalk.

MCC GOVERNING BOARD TO MEET: The monthly meeting of the McLean Community Center Governing Board will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the center.

‘MODERN DUTCH MASTER’ FEATURED AT McLEAN ART SOCIETY MEETING: The McLean Art Society this month will feature Anna Katalkina giving a demonstration of how to transfer a drawing or image from paper to canvas, the first step in creating her distinctly realistic and luminous paintings.

The program will take place on Friday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. at the McLean Community Center.

Katalkina has been called “a modern Dutch Master,” influenced by the seventeenth 17th-century small Dutch paintings. Her work draws from European travel, music, literature and the performing arts, while striking a balance between traditional and modern and exploring both serious and lighthearted themes.

Through her technique of applying multiple translucent glazes of paint on top of underlayers, Katalkina alters values and hues to achieve a depth of color not readily obtainable from a brushstroke. The result is the illusion of a smooth, three-dimensional surface.

This event is free and open to the public; all ages are welcome to attend.

DRUMMING-CIRCLE EVENT COMING TO ALDEN THEATRE: The Alden Theatre of the McLean Community Center will feature a djembe drumming family workshop featuring master artist Kofi Dennis on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the center.

Designed for all ages, participants will learn basic drumming skills that will culminate with a group drum circle. Drums will be provided for use.

The cost is $10 for McLean residents, $12-15 for others. For information and to register, see the Website at www.mcleancenter.org.
