Longfellow Middle School had the most number of Fairfax County students (40) offered admission to the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology Class of 2028 of any middle school in the county, Fairfax school leaders said.

A total of 550 students were offered admission to the regional magnet school, selected from 2,627 applicants, school officials said.

In the GazetteLeader coverage area, Kilmer Middle School saw 35 students offered admission, Cooper Middle School 24 and Luther Jackson Middle School 23. They were among 11 county middle schools that saw 10 or more students receive admissions officers.

Under a controversial admissions change enacted several years ago, the school system moved away from a strictly merit-based admissions policy and now requires that at least some students from every county middle school receive offers of admission.

While run by Fairfax County Public Schools, Thomas Jefferson also serves students from Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties and the city of Falls Church.
