Fairfax County Public Schools and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on April 17 heralded a $16.5 million grant to the school system, which will bring more than 40 electric buses to the school system’s bus fleet.

“Thanks to the EPA’s Clean School Bus grant, this community will receive a boost in its efforts to reduce emissions through sustainable transportation, marking a significant investment that will lead to cleaner air, healthier students and a greener tomorrow,” EPA Mid-Atlantic regional administrator Adam Ortiz said at the ceremony, held at Lorton Station Elementary School.

Fairfax was selected to receive the grant funding in January.

“We are honored and excited,” Superintendent Michelle Reid said at the April 17 ceremony.

Nationally, the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program will provide $5 billion in funding. For information on the initiative, see the Website at https://www.epa.gov/cleanschoolbus.
