The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors was slated May 7 to approve a supplemental-appropriation resolution allowing county police to accept a grant from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services to operate an “Option 5 Out-of-State Lateral Training Program” at the Criminal Justice Training Academy.

This modified basic-training program will facilitate the transfer of former out-of-state, federal and military law-enforcement personnel who are seeking to relocate to Fairfax County. Candidates for this program must meet eligibility requirements and be approved for a partial training waiver.

All program participants must receive classroom training on various law-enforcement functions, including ones pertaining to the law and situations involving domestic violence, drunk driving and emotionally disturbed people.

Candidates also must take 40 hours of driver training and 24 hours of firearms instruction and will be tested regularly via written exams, timed driving courses, practical exercises and firearms-proficiency demonstrations.

The $129,524 grant includes a $32,381 (25 percent) local cash match, which will be funded from a reserve set aside for that purpose.
