GARDEN CLUB LOOKS AT USING INVASIVES AS ART: Five Hills Garden Club will host a program – “Creating with Invasive-Plant Castoffs” – on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at Vienna Presbyterian Church, 124 Park St., N.E.

Patterson Clark, who will present the program, harvests exotic invasive vegetation to extract paper fibers, pigments and lumbers to make art that “celebrates the bounty and inherent qualities of alien weeds,” club members said.

The community is invited.

SHEPHERD’S CENTER TO HOST MEET-AND-GREET BREAKFAST:  The Shepherd’s Center of Northern Virginia will hold a volunteer meet-and-greet potluck breakfast on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Vienna Baptist Church, 541 Marshall Road, S.W. in Vienna.

“Usher in the new year and find out how you can make a difference in the lives of older adults,” organizers said.

VIENNA ARTS CENTER HOSTS MEET-THE-ARTISTS RECEPTION:  The Vienna Arts Society will host a reception on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the center, located in the Windover Professional Building at 243 Church St., N.W.

“Enjoy a sip and a bite and see the current exhibition, an exuberant nod to Mardi Gras,” society leaders said.

ALDEN THEATRE PRESENTS ONE-MAN SHOW: “The Never Too Late Show,” a multi-media one-man show by Don Reed, will be presented on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Alden Theatre of the McLean Community Center.

“Both hilarious and heartbreaking, it chronicles his travails and perseverance through the holiday gauntlet to late-night TV,” center officials said.

AMERICAN LEGION POST HOSTS MONTHLY BREAKFAST: American Legion Post 180 will host its monthly breakfast-buffet fund-raiser on Sunday, Jan. 21 from 8 a.m. to noon at the post, 330 Center St., N., in Vienna.

The menu will include custom omelets, scrambled eggs, pancakes, potatoes, bacon, sausage-and-gravy, Post 180 cake and more.

The cost is $12 for adults, $5 for children under age 12. Proceeds will support sending local high-school students to Girls State and other youth activities.

IMAGINATIVE PIANIST FEATURED AT ALDEN THEATRE:  The Alden Theatre of the McLean Community Center will present “Music + Literature: Murakami Music” presented by pianist Yvonne Chen on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.

“A devoted chamber musician and imaginative soloist, Chen has been pushing the limits for pianists of the 21st century,” center officials said.
