The French Honor Society at BASIS Independent McLean is working to support education in Madagascar by starting a scholarship to pay for school tuition at a newly rebuilt pre-kindergarten-to-12th-grade school serving 2,000 students.

The club has launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe with the goal to raise $10,000 towards scholarships for students at Saint François Xavier School (SFX) of Fianarantsoa in Madagascar.

BASIS’s French teacher and students will visit Madagascar in June to deliver the scholarships, learn about the culture there and practice their French.

Located off the southeast coast of Africa, the Republic of Madagascar was annexed by France in 1897 and won independence in 1960. French is one of the nation’s two official languages, along with Malagasy.
